Service Description

This Remote Area First Aid Course is 3 days of practical training and assessment after completing online, self-directed learning modules and a pre-course exam. The online learning modules are accessible pre, during and post the course allowing us to focus on practical training sessions and scenarios as much as possible. The combined delivery of the online modules and the face to face course is equivalent to an 60 hour course based on the nominal hours of delivery. Within the area of 'First Aid' it is commonly agreed that a "Remote Area" is that which is more than 1 hour from definitive care, and definitive care being a permanent medical facility. The definition of what is "remote" varies substantially between regions of the world, however essentially it constitutes isolated communities, workplaces or areas of interest that have limited access through transport and communication. Providing First aid in a remote location, is the immediate care given to an injured or suddenly ill person. It does not take the place of definitive medical care. It consists only of giving assistance until a more advanced level of medical care is obtained or until the chance for recovery without medical care is apparent. The course focuses on the skills and knowledge required to provide the best care to a patient, whilst waiting for an extended period of time for help to arrive. Day 1 focuses on CPR, Primary Surveys, Evaluating Injuries & Environment and Trauma Day 2 focuses on Patient Assessments, Medical Conditions and Scenarios Day 3 focuses on Multiple Causality Scenarios , Wound Care and First Aid Kits The difference between the 3 day Remote Area and 4 day Wilderness course is a focus on coordination of the emergency with an emphasis on a search and rescue scenario and single response wilderness first aid scenarios. This course awards the following units of competency.
