Service Description

This Wilderness First Aid Course is 4 days of practical training and assessment after completing online, self-directed learning modules and a pre-course exam. The online learning modules are accessible pre, during and post the course allowing us to focus on practical training sessions and scenarios as much as possible. The combined delivery of the online modules and the face to face course is equivalent to an 80 hour course based on the nominal hours of delivery. A “Wilderness” area is more than 1 hour from definitive care (Medical Centre/Hospital) and also a region where the land is in a natural state; where impacts from human activities are minimal—that is "as a wilderness". As such, not only is appropriate First Aid care key, but also the ability to coordinate the response. Wilderness first aid is the immediate care given to an injured or suddenly ill person. It does not take the place of definitive medical care, and consists only of giving assistance until a more advanced level of medical care is obtained or until the chance for recovery without medical care is apparent. The course focuses on the skills and knowledge required to provide the best care to a patient, whilst waiting for an extended period of time for help to arrive, and also the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate an appropriate response, including communications to emergency services and evacuation considerations. Day 1 focuses on CPR, Primary Surveys, Evaluating Injuries & Environment and Trauma Day 2 focuses on Patient Assessments, Medical Conditions and Scenarios Day 3 focuses on Multiple Causality Scenarios , Wound Care and First Aid Kits Day 4 focuses on Improvised Carries and Stretchers, Single Response Wilderness Scenarios and a SAR Group Scenarios The difference between the 3 day Remote Area and 4 day Wilderness course is a focus on coordination of the emergency with an emphasis on a search and rescue scenario and single response wilderness first aid scenarios. This course awards the following units of competency.
