Alpine Backcountry Wilderness First Aid

Service Description

This Alpine Backcountry Wilderness First Aid Course is specifically designed for backcountry users. In partnership with Alpine Access www.alpineaccess.com.au we have created a course to give participants the knowledge and skills to help manage a patient for a prolonged period of time whilst waiting for emergency services to arrive. The course is 4 days of practical training and assessment after completing online, self-directed learning modules and a pre-course exam (Please be aware the WFA exam is a generic exam based on the WFA skill set and not Alpine Specific) . The online learning modules are accessible pre, during and post the course allowing us to focus on practical training sessions and scenarios as much as possible. The combined delivery of the online modules and the face to face course is equivalent to an 95 hour course based on the nominal hours of delivery. The 4 days will be spent training in the practical knowledge and skills and running realistic scenarios in the alpine environment. Knowledge in use of Beacons and Probes and Companion Rescue is essential. A “Wilderness” area is more than 1 hour from definitive care (Medical Centre/Hospital) and also a region where the land is in a natural state; where impacts from human activities are minimal—that is "as a wilderness". As such, not only is appropriate First Aid care key, but also the ability to coordinate the response. Day 1 CPR, Patient Assessments, and Environmental Considerations. Day 2 Trauma and Medical Practical Training, Scenarios Day 3 Wound Care and backcountry gear selection Scenarios Day 4 Scenarios in the backcountry This course awards the following units of competency. HLTAID009 Provide CPR 22282VIC Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace 22099VIC Management of Anaphylaxis HLTAID011 Provide first aid SISOFLD004 Provide first aid in remote locations SISXEMR002 Coordinate and Emergency Response NO Accomodation is available for this course. NO Lift ticket required. The course will take place at the High Plains Hotel or Mt Hotham Alpine Base (MOTH) - TBC closer to the course. Scenarios in the backcountry between Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham It is essential you have appropriate back country gear including personal gear, backpack, avalanche beacon, probe, shovel, spare clothing, food and water and space to carry training gear that will be provided. You can use a Split Board, Alpine Touring Set up, Telemark Set up or Snow Shoes for the course.
